Hi all, Ok first of all, Does any body know of a web site that I can get spark plug wires and a coil from? And, When I start my tractor it only stays running for like a half a minute then it dies, And when you push in the clutch it wants to die but when you let the clutch out it is fine. What could be the problem? is my carb messed up? Thanks, TractorMike

Steve or somebody, When I was looking at my engine, I discovered a crack in my water jacket along the freez plug by the carb. And I was wondering if this is going to hurt anything? It only leaks when it is cold. Should I have it welded? Thanks, TractorMike

Mike,
Welding cast iron is pretty tricky. The person that is welding it should know what he's doing. I work in a heavy truck shop and when an external type crack like that appears, we use a product called JB Weld. It's a two part epoxy product that you can apply to cracks in blocks, fuel tanks, all kinds of stuff. It worked everytime for us. Might be somthin' to try..... I get it at Napa here in Jersey. Hi all, Took my gas tank off last night and got to get a better look at it today and found a ton of rust in the tube that comes ouf of the gas tank and goes in to that little glass bowl, It's a wonder the thing even started at all. It should run a lot better after I get all the rust out. Now, Does any body know of any good cleaners to get the rust out of my gas tank? TractorMike

Saw a post a while back where the guy would put a length of dog chain in the tank, jack up his lawnmower, bungee the gas tank to a rear wheel, put the lawnmower in a slow gear and walk away for a while. Sounds like an easy way to do it. I guess you'd need to tie the mower to a tree just in case ....!

Mike, someguys will suggest an acid solution to get the rust out. The old reliable is to put a couple coffee cans full of gravel and 2 gallons of water inside and "work it around". You are trying to get the big loose stuff out. Afterwards you can just reinstall the tank, or go thru the acid rinse, neutralizer, and sealer trick. Just remember most acid is an etch, and will not remove major rust by itself. If you want to spend the money for the sealer, others will recommend where to get it.----- it is very possible some rust got thru the tank screen on the sediment bowl and is stuck in the carburetor. Does the carb have a tendance to overflow fuel? If so, there is rust under the float valve.

Sounds like what my B was doing a few years ago, but my trouble was not affected by the clutch position. I had the carb rebuilt and that helped a lot. Check your points, in damp weather they can deposit from one contact to the other until they are nearly constantly closed. The coil and wires can get bought from any tractor suppply store, Central Tractor has (or had) them, the Central Tractor stores in my area have gone under. The Tractor Supply Co. (TSC) has them, and many others should also. Usually it is a wire kit that you use to make up the wires, so keep the old ones to match the lengths. Good luck, but the B is strong and when fixed will run good for a long time.

My B had the same problem I took the oil bath aircleaner off and soaked it till it came clean,ran like a top after that.

Mike,
Try John Brillman's website below for those plug wires and coil.
For the running/stalling problems, I would disassemble and clean the carb thoroughly and try it again. Sometimes that's all that is needed. If that doesen't help, check inside the tank for rust. It will clog the screen on the fuel bowl and the engine will starve for fuel.

a magneto has a coil inside. If it failed, you have to buy a new one and they were over $50. some guys thought is was easier (cheaper) to take a coil off an old truck and "wire it in", but you need a battery to fire the external coil.

take the gas line loose at the carb. put it in a pail and turn on the shutoff at the tank.if it flows continuously and good, then problem is probably inside the carb.
