How do you identify the model/year?

My fiancee and I just bought a new house and they threw a tractor in the deal. It's an Allis-Chalmers, that much I know ('cause it says so on the side ).

But we are total tractor-newbies so how do we find out more about this tractor, how to operate it, etc.?

Thanks Everyone! We have the home inspection next Tuesday so we can get pictures of the tractor then. Neither myself nor my fiancee really remember it well enough to match it to the pictures here. Once we have pictures of the tractor and all the attachments I'll post them here (I can post pictures, can't I?) and get your help again!

And at least now I have a couple ideas of where to look for serial numbers and such!

the small tractors built in the 1940-50 era had no frame around the engine. the engine and torque tube back to the transmission form the strength. If no frame, look on the transmission case by the shift lever. C,CA,B The bigger tractors of the 1940-50 era had a c-channel frame down both sides of the engine and around the radiator. the serial number on these is onrear axle and is WD, WD45, etc. The new tractors built after 1960 have the serial number on the rear corner of the engine and start with D10, 12, 14, 17, etc. write back on what it "looks like"

worst case scenario: you purchase a book by: C.H. wendall (spelling?) called "Nebraska farm tractor tests" they have pictures of quite afew tractor's of diffewrent sizes and shapes.Luck.

Motorbooks has quite a few books on ACs and a lot of other tractors too. I think if you search on them you will find them, if not ask me and I will find their address for you.

Generally, serial number locations are as follows:Model B, C, CA - by the gearshift lever. WC,WD, WD45- rear differential. D10, D12, D14, D15, D17, D19-midway on left side, on clutch housing casting, just to the rear of the engine.

To start from scratch, perhaps the photo gallery will help you.Check the sidebar on the left of this screen. Find Gallery, click on Tractor Photos, Find Categories on the screen, click on Allis-Chalmers. There are about 250 photos to check on, and some should look like your tractor. Tractor serial numbers are found in various places, depending on the model. Some are on the rear end (Differential), or by the gearshift lever, or midway along the left side of the tractor. Engines also have their own serial numbers, and are not the tractor serial numbers. Some cast parts like axles have numbers cast in them- they are not serial numbers. Serial numbers are punched into the metal, not raised numbers like in the castings. Hope this helps- and this is always a good place to ask questions.

Go to the column on the left side of this page and click on tractor photos. Try to identify a photo that best resembles your tractor. Post back here for information on where to look for the serial number to positivly identify what you have and any other specific information you may want. Duey
