WD air filter

Does anyone know if the guts to the air filter can be removed. I did'nt think so, but there are some clip looking things on the bottom when the oil cup is removed that might hold everything in? Never heard of being able to take them apart. I don't want to wreck something trying if it can't be done.

You're correct. The bottom screen and bell shaped center is compression fitted to the bottom of the air can. Carefully tap the outer rim (be sure to wiggle the inner bell out at the same rate) off the air can. (You'll probably bend the screen up a little, no worries, it bends back easily enough.) With the screen retainer removed you can fish out the wire (doughnut shaped) elements (three or four doughnuts). Mine looked more like adobe bricks than air element but a little soaking in gas (outside and no smoking please, diesel or kerosene and some say plain old soapy water works too) and a little gentle pounding to remove the fluff (repeating the soakings as needed). Be sure to clean the inside of the air can and the inside of the inner air tube. I was able to do this without removing the air can from the tractor using a regular wire brush after I extended the handle a bit with tape and a scrape piece of wood. Finished by wiping the can and tube out with an oily rag. Be sure to change the oil (use the same as you put in the engine) often to prevent the adobe build up. The book says every day with normal use, every four hours in extreme use. I change mine after about eight hours of operations, which can be daily during the summer months but can extend over several months during the winter.

Thanks, will give it a try. The two filters I have have been sitting for a long time. One for at least 25 years, this is why I am going to take them apart. You are really good about cleaning and changing the oil in the cup. When I worked on a farm as a kid and we had a B and 45 we used to maybe change it once or if it was lucky twice a year. And wash out the upper filter with gas when it was so plugged with hay seed and chaf that the tractor wouldn't run. I just didn't know how or if it came apart, thanks again.
