My New AC B not Starting

Over the weekend I brought home my first Allis Chalmers Tractor. It is a B and started fine for the previous owner as I looked at it. After loading it on the trailer and driving 3 hours in a snow storm it wouldn't start to take it off of the trailer. Now bringing a tractor home around here tends to draw a crowd and one of my neighbors suggested I had condensation in the distributor or magneto. This conclusion was arrived at after pulling one of the spark plug wires placing a key in it and putting it next to the spark plug and not seeing any spark. After that we tried to dry out the distributor by putting a heat lamp next to it for about an hour and still no spark.

That night I gave up and yesterday morning pushed it off the trailer and into the garage. While the garage is not air tight, I did manage to get it up to about 50 degrees in there for several hours and tried to start the old girl again with no success.

So, what is the best way to check for spark? Will a magneto put out enough spark to see arcing?

Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated.

Don't feel to bad about the kill switch, I always carry two chainsaw's to woods with me when I cut fire wood. I try to fuel, oil and clean each saw before taking it up back and one day I thought I had both filled, One wouldn't start to beat the band!! Spent an hour trying to figure out the problem, turned out that I didn't fill up the gas tank. It just doen't like to run with air in the tank!!

Thanks for all the input. I actually had the switch wrong. The previous owner contacted me and said the switch should be in to start. Kinda makes me fill a little silly, but owell!

Don't worry, my neighbor still talks about me putting new coil, plugs, points & wires on my B when there was not enough gas in the tank....

Keith, Don't feel silly. One reason I like old iron is because I learn something new every day. P.S. One of the first things I ever learned about tractors was to never get on one until you know how to kill it! Be careful and have fun. Dale

Hey Keith, To answer your question, that mag should throw very hot spark. I assume it is a Fairbanks Morse model FMJ series mag. These mags are fairly reliable and will throw at least a 1/4" spark. To be honest, if they are right, they will throw close to a 1/2" spark. Like one of the gentleman said, disconect the wire from the switch at the mag. That way, you will eliminate the switch. Dale,

I'm assuming you mean the switch below the ammeter and to the right of the light/charge switch? I have it pulled out when trying to start the tractor. Is that correct?

You can take the switch wire off at the magneto if you want to check the switch. You do not need the switch hooked up to run. I have one B that you push the switch to start and pull out to stop. That is just opposit to what it says on the switch.
You might have to clean the points.
