My Dad and I have a D-17 IV diesel that has been sitting for several years. We got the engine running but we'er having trouble with the lift arms on the three-point hitch. When we start the tractor the arms raise and we can't get them down, no matter how we set the controls. When we shut the engine down the arms will slowly go back down. I would appreciate any words of wisdom anyone has on this matter.

Larry:

The problem that you are having is caused by the traction booster linkage being frozen and holding the traction booster spool in the raise position. You can get the arms to lower by removing the cap from the back of the traction booster valve and tappin the valve forward. The traction booster valve is the valve at the right side of the valve stack. Make sure that the traction boost and position control levers are both moved ahead all of the way before tapping on the valve. The linkage will have to be freed up if you intend to use the traction boost or position control levers. Good luck.
