Hello all Allis Chalmers experts:

What do you think of the Chalmers 190XT. Was it a good tractor with a good reputation. How was it mechanically... It seems to be way less expensive than John Deere or the Case... why is that.

Would this be a good and reliable tractor for a 50 acres of plowing, planting, and haying. Any good or bad news on this model or make... any suggestions would be welcome...

Wendy I agree with the other guy's, we have 12 AC's from little G to a 200 B, C, WD, WD-45, D-17, 175, 185, 190XT, 200, more hobby farm than anything now but in their day wow they would turn some head's still work about 200 ac. the 190XT has pulled 5-18 plow's and 18ft disk and 18ft feild culivator never no problem other than oil change and grease. D17 ser. IV and 190XT my favorate yet today.

You should have no problem with a 190xt. That was the first tractor I drove when I was a kid and loved it ever since. If you want a good 190xt look for the series IV because they had the heavier rear axles for pulling. Earlier series had light back ends and pulling was very hard on the transmission and gears. Good luck, you can't go wrong with a 190xt.

I have a 190XT and love the tractor.I also have D19 and WD45 which I like alot but I think the 190XT is a superior tractor. Also you can do anything with the 190XT that you can with the WD45
or D17 and alot more, also cost very little more
to operate.

I grew up on a 190 xt spent many hours on that tractor we farmed 840 acers with it we had a 720 JD for the second tractor but the 190 xt was a great tractor there was problem with the trans and diff in them. But I've learned that those 190's that were dualled up didn't have any problems they were to light in the back causing chattering in the drive train causing gears to chip put duals on for haevy pulling we pulled 14 ft chiesl plow all day long. I disagree with the earlier posts, I say buy as big equipment as possible. A 190XT would be a nice fit for about fifty acres. I am not very familiar with this particular Allis Chalmers line, but I have heard rumor that the transmissions were the weakest link in these tractors (occasional popping out of gear, misc.) The diesel engines were pretty reliable, as were the gasoline engines. Just look the tractor over very thoroughly, check the maintenance records, and approach at your discretion. If it is in relatively good condition I would not hesitate to make the purchase. Good luck.

190XT is in the same power range as JD4020, IH 806, Case1030, etc. Green is higher priced, better resale value, more popular, reliable company, and some dealers lie about what they sold them for, keeping bluebook value high! Remember that a low priced, high hp tractor is ok, until something needs repair. Even if you have only a few acres and got your work done quickly at low cost, the repairs cost just as much whether you farm 50 or 300 acres. Then the choice is pay the bucks or park it in the weeds. Using a big tractor on small equipment may be ok, and cause less wear, but machines should be matched to the power in front, otherwise you make little pieces out of good equipment when the rocks get in the way. Tend to pull implements faster, too- which makes more pieces. Inanimate objects are called that for a reason, boy did I find that out the hard way!

I'd agree with previous post regarding size required for 50 acres. It's typical tractor for farming several hundred acres. Early versions had same rear end as D19, and did not stand up to 93hp that this engine put out. (D19 was 73hp). Company had a warranty program to change out rear ends, some were done and some not. Later series had heavier rear from factory. Not sure if you can tell from axle diameter. A D17 might be more suited to you- later technology than WD45, hi-lo power range like 190, hydraulic system better than WD45, not as much capacity than 190, but fairly easy to add double spool valve if needed for two-way cylinders- later series like IV would likely have that already.

DEPENDS ON THE SIZE OF YOUR EQUIPMENT..A WD45 OR D17 WOULD WORK JUST AS WELL ON THAT ACREAGE...190 WERE GOOD TRACTORS BUT NOT AS CHEAP TO MAINTAIN..MARK
