starting in 1952 WDs with serial number 127008 and up, the 4 speed transmission was changed to a constant mesh style to replace the previous sliding-gear style that had strait-cut teeth. the old style transmission had a straight gearshift lever unlike the curved style on the newer one. therefore there are roughly 19599 WDs with the curved shifter from the factory. the above data comes from Terry Deans "Allis-Chalmers Farm tractors and crawlers Data Book"

45 engines had a oil line to the governor, no side plate, and the engine no. said "45". The best way is to look at the nos, engine and tractor. I believe 45s had the curved seat mounting bar too, WD is straight with a sharp bend and shock is not adjustable as to position at top.

Look at the right side of the engine. The w-d has a plate bolted to that side of the block. The w-d45 has no plate it is just the casting of the block. Also the w-d45 has a curved shift lever and the w-d is straight.

The 1953 WD's had the curved shifter.
