i need to get a starter for my allis c 1941 i have the old one should i send it off or can you get a new one or buy a rebuilt one thanks also stay with 6 volt or is 12 volt that much better what is the advantage thanks matt

Matt,
You can rebuild it yourself in just a few hours and for the cost of parts, IF you can find a good parts supplier in your area. All it usually takes is a bushing, a bearing and a set of brushes for parts. Then you need to clean the commutator well and make sure that none of the individual copper contact areas are shorted. Install the bushing, bearing and new brushes after cleaning up the housing and maybe repaint it and you're done.

If there are problems with the rotor or windings in the housing, you'll probably be better off getting a rebuilt unit or having yours rebuilt. I've heard prices for this ranging from about $25 to over $200, depending on the unit and the shop that does the work.

WARNING: Those that are students at The Far Side School for the Mechanically Declined should never attempt to repair a starter without professional supervision! :o)
