I am going to a auction this week end where they have a WD45 don't know the year. I am looking for comments on this tractor, what to look for and what are problems common with this tractor. Were these tractors offered with live hyd. independent PTO, and live power? I would appreciate any info I have some experience with Fords but none with Allis. Also where do you find the serial#? Thank You.

The WD45 does have live power, but it is not independent power. Independent means it is available whether or not the foot clutch is engaged or disengaged. In other words, independent power is available whenever the engine is running. Live power means that the pto and hydraulics work even when forward or reverse motion of the tractor is stopped with a clutch. In this case, that power is made available by operating the hand clutch. The foot clutch stops all transmission of power to the hydraulics, pto, belt pulley and wheels.

I always thought the WD45's were good to use for running small pto powered square bailers, because of the live power. But' I am confussed. If you use the foot clutch to stop forward movement of the tractor, won't it stop the power to the PTO? OR does the hand clutch stop the forward movement only.

yea dave. the foot clutch disconnects the power at the engine to everything and the transmission and pto both stop, no forward movement. the hand clutch disconnects the transmission power to the wheels and leaves the engine driving the shaft to the pto. you still have hydraulics, but no forward movement. "almost live pto"

One of the main things is to check and see if it will jump out of gear. Third or Second is the most common. Which ever gear was used most. If it is going to jump out of gear it will do it when the load lets up. To try it drive over a grade of some sort and push the gas lever up just before you start over the grade. If is going to jump out of gear it probably will then. This is one of the worst things about the 45 tranny.

Check the boot on the shift lever. If it is cracked or missing there may be water in the transmission. Some isn't too bad, a lot can damage and even crack the pto, lowest point.

The serial number is on the rear axle to the right of the left brake spring hole - it will be faintly stamped so you may have to scrape some paint.

One normal wear hang-up is a tractor that gets hung in 2nd gear (or another gear) when shifting out. This is due to wear on the shift tower and shift lever among other things. A new shift lever is $106 and shift tower rebuild is probably around $100 to $200 if you have it done.

Check the hand clutch - it should snap in and out with not too much play. Raise the lift arms and operate the pto to make sure everything works with no knocks, and run it in every gear a little to make sure each one works. Check the engine over like normal, etc.

Good tractor. All came with a hand clutch - no live pto as such but the hand clutch allowed a semblance of that (and after you get used to it it works fine). I spent a lot of time on one of these years ago and just bought one to restore. 43 pto hp (gasoline).
