I've found an allis B in decent shape that I'm thinking of buying. I was planning on converting it to industrial by rotating the final drives, and then add a belly mower, a front mount pump, loader and 3 pt. hitch.

Couple of questions:

-the front axle on the B I was looking at was the wishbone, non-adjustable style. I saw in a picture here that for converting to IB you could just turn the axle upside-down. I don't know if this would be strong enough to handle a light loader. Has anyone ever made their own front axle or used that out of a different, bigger tractor?

-front mount pump - how do you connect it to the crank shaft?

You might try using a C wide front. Unweld the spindle tubes and reweld them 9 inches higher up. You should cut a section out of the spindle tubes, move the upper bushing down, and clamp the steering arms down lower on the spindle shaft. This was the way the British did it. You would need the B left side steering cranks to connect the steering linkage to the original B style steering arm. Note that the torque tube is shorter on a real IB. Besides the hitch problem, you will have to fabricate a lot of brake linkages. It's conceivable that you could mount a coupling to the crankshaft pulley and reconfigure the radiator support and axle support for a hydraulic pump. Bottom of radiator shell will be messed up.

It's a little questionable whether the crankshaft or the connection between the crankshaft and crankshaft pulley can take the torque for very long. Usually, you'd need a splined coupling instead of a simple key and/or set-screw. My brother did this sort of modification to his D17, and it is done regularly on small Fords. On more modern tractors the hydraulic pump would be run off a shaft permanently engaged to the rear of the crankshaft and running back through a hollow clutch shaft. On the later Fords, it is attached to the side of the engine and run off a gear train in front of the flywheel. Other possible connections could be to the front or rear end of the camshaft. The governor is usually there, though. The small power steering pumps are run by belts from the front of the engine.

I have considered makeing a low slung tractor out of a B also. Presently i have an IB model.
The IB has a straight front axle and it is supported by a channel frame that bolts from the final drive housing and runs forward on both sided and bolts to the enginge clutch housing. It extends forward and wrapas around the radiator. This would form the "brace" needed to support the front mounted pump and a heavy axle and loader frame. Sounds like a big job. The second problem is the three point hitch. When you rotate the final drive housings forward the tractor drops 6 inches. The axle gear boxes are now forward of the seat below your feet. Not much to connect a drawbar or 3 point frame to in the back. I made my own and it was quite a job. I can send you a couple pictures if you intend to do it. Other porblem is it raises from 9 inches to 24 inches off the ground. Some would like more height in the upper travel for some implements. I have see a picture of a B with the wishbone front end upside down to lower the unit. Does not look very heavy duty for a loader.
I am considereing building the "modified low B" make my own straight axle with the B spindles, and mounting a belly or central sickle mower like it was originaly intended to do. You can leave off the channel frame if you do this. Bucket and pump would be a real problem design, and 3 point is limited use. ----just my opinion.

The channel supports the front axle on the IB? So it doesn't pivot anymore?

How were you planning on making a front axle? I was thinking like a peice of rectangular tube 1.75" x 4" or something with a tube on either end for the spindles.

the C-channel has an undercarriage under the radiator fan area with a pivot point in the center so it will still pivot. It will bottom out on the side channel if tilted more than several degrees, probably less than a farm tractor. You idea of the axle is right, i had planned on 2 x 3 square stock or so. A short pipe about 5 inches on each end would hold the original spindles (they would have to be cut shorter or they stick out the top too far). I will try to send a few pictures of a IB that i have taken and a few others for reference. Have fun, tell me if you decide to try this. I dont have pictures of the three point today. Will get some this weekend.

Steve, I too have an IB and have thought about making a three point for it. If you could add me to that list for the pictures I sure would apreciate it. Also, if you have any pictures of an IB with a sickle bar or belly mower that would be great. Thanks.
