First off, Thanks Dick & Mike, Both of you had ideas that may have been part of the problem. Heres the update. Snooping a little further I find that 2 of the connecting rods are put in one way and 2 the other. There is a bolt holding the wrist pin in and in #1&3 it is facing to the right, 2&4 are facing left. I don't have a book yet (I will) But seems like with a clockwise rotation of the engine, they should all be the same way. Am I correct and if so, what effect would putting them in this way have on the running of the engine? Thanks again guys. Dan

Thanks Dick (and steve), I had to stop anyway, I measured the ring gap like you suggested and came up in the .032 to .035 range. Looks like time for new rings. I figure I can do this if I take my time. Will I need oversized rings? Thanks again for sharing your knowledge. Dan

measuring the bore is a good idea. should be about .010-.015 and you have .035 or .025 too much. since the diameter of the bore is 1/3 the circumference, your bore is either .008 oversize. or your rings are severly worn.----might want to chekc the piston diameter also and see what clearance you have to the bore. I think it should be in the .005-max range. If you are up to .015 you got toooo much.

Probably, you need to measure the inside Diameter of the sleeve, after you have removed the ridge at the top of the sleeve and honed them with a cylinder hone useing lots of # 1 diesel or such.
This will give you the information needed to purchase the correct rings.

2 rods MUST have the piston pin clamp
bolt on the right and 2 facing the left side of the engine. The rods are made with an offset to clear the block casting for the main bearings.
If you study the set-up a bit,
you will easily see which way they go.

What you found is the correct way for them to be.
To keep the engine block as short in length as it is and maintain a ballanced crankshaft at the short length it is nessary for the centers of the crankshaft rod crank pins to be slightly off center to the center of the pistons. The bearing retainer part of the rod is off center from the center of the rod shank. If you put them all back in the same way, two of them will bind on the crankshaft. The B's, C's, and CA's are the same as well as several other engines.

I had the same question last month on a disassembled engine i bought and Dick set me straight. 1 and 3 face one way , 2 and 4 the other. If you look close you will see the connecting rod big end is larger on one side than the other. The crankshaft journal is not centered over the piston. 1 and 2 rods are close to eachother and 3 and 4 rods are close to each other because there is a main bearing between 2 and 3. They will not fit any other way, dont try.
