WD-45 shifter popping out of forks

I am looking for advice on solving a problem with my WD-45. The forks are worn enough that often when shifting less than perfectly carefully it will pop out of alignment, and I have to remove the shifter and manually align the forks, and reinstall the shifter. I have gotten a new shifter with the larger guide pins on the side of the shifter, have tried welding additional material on the tip of the shifter in the hopse that it would be less likely to displace. I also tried various combinations of washers, keepers and snap rings trying to hold the lever down, but invariably it comes out at the worst times. I am starting to mumble a lot, and the dog stays clear. Any Ideas?

Had a similar problem with mine and I think the best solution is to replace the forks. Fairly easy to remove- battery and steering wheel support need to be removed first, then maybe 8 bolts to get the whole tower out. I believe the forks are the same on WD and WD45. If so, many salvage yards should have towers with good forks. WD tower has only one pin that engages the round ball of the shift lever, WD45 has two. I used a WD tower, and drilled straight through the existing hole to make a hole directly opposite, to match the 45 shift lever. When exchanging forks, you need to remove the shafts they slide on- watch out for detent balls, springs, etc. that fly out. I&T manual is a good guide for parts assembly. There's at least one "slug" inside(elongated ball) along with the balls and springs- so keep careful track of each, work on a clean floor so they're easy to find when they go flying. For reassembly into the tractor, put the transmission in reverse and the forks go in easier. Tower has to be in reverse, also. If shifter doesn't sit low and tight enough in its seat, use a single thicker washer below the snap ring, rather than several thin ones.
