Can anyone tell me where I can purchase the i/e manifold studs for the cylinder head on a '39 WC or can you make them from steel rod and thread the ends?

Go to mcmaster.com web site. They have dozens of studs including stainless steel. You can buy one of anything and it is not a problem. I have bought lots of items from them and was well pleased.

You should be able to find something very close
to original at an auto parts store. Most have a
selection to pick from for use when replacing car
exhaust systems. Take a old one with you as a sample. Threaded rod is not the proper material.

You would need grade 8 bolts to make them from to get the proper torque. You will need a real good die to cut the threads in 8 grade bolts.

I replaced my broken ones with some long Gr 5 bolts I had lying around. I cut them to the right length and threaded the end I cut. Gr 5 bolts thread OK. When installing the manifold I used SS washers, brass nuts and anti seize compound; seems like I have to replace those little gaskets every couple of years!

The reason I said Grade 8 is because the engine torque specs will be the max of the amout of torque you should torque a bolt as stated on the bolt torque charts. Bolts will take a little more torque than the chart states.

We are talking MANIFOLD studs here, not too critical I don't think. Head studs are a different matter. I agree though, no on threaded rod, but about anything else should work.

I didn't read for meaning, My mind only cought the cylinder head at the end. You still don't want to use soft studs in the manifold. They twist off much easyer when you try to take them out years later. I think the manifold studs are grade 5.

I don't see why you can't make them. Just try to start the threads straight. Use a lathe if you have one. I plan on making mine when I get to putting the engine together for my WD maybe this spring.
