My D-14 started great to move the snow yesterday. However, it stalled when I let the clutch out - although not in gear. After several attempts at letting the clutch out slowly, I finally got it and moved all the snow successfully. I am using 85-140 Gear Oil - and everything works great when it's warm.

Thanks for the information. I loosened the plug and some 'thick soup' did flow out - so I've ruled out water. I also pluged in the tank heater before starting, so I think the engine itself is fine. It REALLY pulls down hard as you let the clutch out when cold. The gear box is also loud initially, and the hydralics don't work. After 1 minute with the clutch out, the hydralics work slowly and it's quieter. After about 3 minutes, all is fine - just like summertime.

I've purchased a 5 gal. pail of CaseIH Trans-hydralic and I'm planning to change to the lighter oil as you've recommended. Next time I use it I'll pull the plug when I'm done. Does anyone know the capacity? I would hate to be short.

You guys missed the obivious the tractor was not up to operating tempeture. 80/80W is th correct weight oil for the power director and the transmission . Old tractors properly tuned will have to run with the choke on a while untill the manifold warms up. All the crap from detriot and the japs nowdays has made people oblivious and lazy. The manufaturers wrote simple and easy to undrstand manuels to go with every piece of equipment they sold for a reason.

I'm not positive, but it may be supposed to have 20wt engine oil in the trans. Check the manual, switching to universal tractor hydraulic oil might be the way to go. Could be ice too. Had that trouble with my CA. Water got in the left final drive and it would not move untill I pulled the pan off. It had been there a long time and ruined all the bearings. Hope this helps, Brian.

Bruce, we had this problem with a D17. I have removed the 80 wt and installed trans-hydraulic fluid severl years ago. Use the same in transmission and hydraulics. I thought the D14-15 used a lighter oil from the factory? I would chekc your book, thought it was 30 wt to start with? Anyway, 140 weight is like tar when you get down to 10 degrees outside. I would consider changing the oil and trying that to fix the problem.

sounds like you may have alot of water in the gearbox. when tractor is cold pull the drain plug on the gear box, if there is water in it, it will be frozen solid and no oil will run out.
