Boy do I hope you guys can help. I have a tractor-which shall remain brandless- that is not an Allis, but has a Fairbanks J model magneto. I need to know what order the mag runs in- as in which plug is No. 1, which is 2, 3 and 4. My cap has no markings whatsoever, so I'm at a loss to hook up my wires. We put them on in the order the IH (oops) manual said to and all we can get it to do backfire. Like I said, any and all help is appreciated and my most sincere thanks given.

Thanks so much. I think our problem has been the fact we're working off the IH firing order, not the A/C firing order. Being off a little would explain why the tractor wanted to backfire when we tried to fire it up.
For what its worth, the mag worked fine about three years ago- knew the fella I bought the tractor from and saw it running all the time. He'd left the tractor outside in a storm one night and then it sat for about six months-freeze up.
One teardown later- I never want to see another frozen piston again- the mag is all that was holding us up. Until now.

Remember that the magneto doesn't care what the firing order of the tractor is. You just have to hook up the wires differently. You'll have to follow the firing order of the tractor.

Generally the socket on the magneto that is up and closest to the engine block is #1 and then goes in a clockwise fashion while looking at the distributor cap. Now, you have to have the magneto hooked up to the tractor properly, because you can actually make any of the sockets work for the number one cylinder. This is because if you turn the magneto half of a round and then reinstall it, the rotor will have moved to the next socket but the engine didn't turn. Thus, the next socket is effectively #1. I hope you're following me. What you need to do is this. First, take out the spark plugs so that you can turn your tractor over easily with a hand crank if you have one or else jack up one back wheel, set the brake on the other, put it in high gear and turn the engine over by turning the wheel forward. Then, put your finger over #1 spark plug cylinder hole and turn the engine until you feel the air from the compression stroke blowing past. When it stops, you're at TDC on the #1 cylinder. Now, remove the two screws that hold on your distributor cap and look at which socket the rotor is pointing towards. Now, either make that your #1 cylinder or else remove the magneto, turn it over until the rotor is pointing to the socket on top and toward the engine block, and reinstall the magneto. I believe that most Farmall engines have a firing order of 1342, but you have the book so it should say. Any Allis built gas engine I know of is 1243. Hopefully this wasn't clear as mud.

Will, the standard firing order on almost all early Allis tractors (maybe all) is 1,2,4,3. I know for a fact that this order was used on WC and WD which used the fmj magneto. Of course, the engine must match this firing order to get satisfactory results. Actually, the mag simply fires four cylinders in order. The user decides where these cylinders are. So even if your tractor desires a different order, you can still use this mag providing you follow the order from the tractor. If you don't know the tractor order, email me and I'll tell you how to determine it.
