I bought a "C" engine that is partly disassembled and have a few questions for Dick or one of you internal engine guys.
--the connecting rod clamp on the crank is on the maggneto side of the engine on 1 and 3?
--the connecting rod clamp is on the oppposite side on 2 and 4 (carb side)
--piston has a notch on the skirt. these all point to the rear?
--knocked out the cylinder liners. are they flat rings or round o-rings when new.
--ordered a gasket set and rings. no bearings or pistons. do i get o-rings in the general gasket kit? or only in the piston-liner kit?
--when i get it back together, can i start with the crank and no flywheel? will it run on an engine stand without flywheel as a balance weight?
--i rebuilt the oil pump and cylinder head so far. didnt try the mag yet. can i test on the bench, or during cranking?
--done a lot of work on these things in the past, but never pulled pistons and liners.

Starting with the rods. The rod bearing retainers are made off center to the center of the rod it self. The wider side of the rod faces the center of the engine for number one and four. The wider side of the rod faces to the out side on number two and three. This is because the center of crankshaft rod crank pin is off center from the cylinders.

The notch in the piston skirt will be faceing the same way only if the person assembling the rods to the pistons paid attention to detail. If they don't no harm will be done.

The O rings on the sleeves will take a set over time in the shape of the area they are forced into. They started out round. They do not come with a standard gasket set. They do come with new sleeves.

Unless you have built a heavy frame engine stand for the purpose of running a test engine you won't want to start the engine on the stand. You will need the flywheel on to run on a test stand and should have a torque tube bolted to the engine and part of the test stand. (Best test stand is a tractor.)

You can bench test the magneto by clamping it in a vice with a plug wire and a plug. Clamp the plug the the magneto case. You will need to snap the impluse and if the magneto is hot you will get a spark every fourth turn.
