I have a small situation I could use some help with. I was changing my engine oil in a 1957 D14 with my son, 8. After draining and changing my filter, my son wanted to help put the oil in. I told him OK, as I looked away, he started to pour the 10W-30 in the filler for the hydraulic pump, which is near the dip stick for the oil. I stopped him but he got about an 1/8th of a quart in there. Sooo, I was wondering will this cause problems? The recommended oil for the the hydraulics is straight 10W or 20W. I have not run the tractor since "the incident", and no Roon did not get in trouble. But do I need to drain the hydraulic system or am I OK.

That reminds me of the time I told my wife to put gas in the WD. I turn around and she is dumping gas in the radiator!! I didn't get angry, but I did give her a hard time. I also got to teach her how to drain the radiator that day. Kraig

My 16 year old daughter called me at work- all worried- said she had put motor oil in the power steering reservoir of the mighty Subaru. I told her not to run the car, I would suck it out with my handy turkey baster when I got home. When I got home and took the cap off the power steering reservoir, she said, "No, over here"- and pointed to the crankcase oil filler. So it turned out she had put motor oil in the crankcase. Who said two wrongs don't make a right?

It shouldn't be any problem. If it was brake fluid or antifreeze, then you might have a problem. The seals in the hyd and trans are made for petro-oils, and should be fine. The motor oil has more detergent in it, and might actually clean a couple things for the next time you change the hyd oil. Hyd oils have some anti-foaming properties, and cold temp properties, but the small amount of engine oil your son added won't matter. When I was 5, I 'helped' my dad put the oil pan on his Massey and broke off a bolt. That was just the beginning of a life of destruction. :-)

Doug,
I would not sweat it too much. I would drain what I could and put in 80/90 weight or TransHydrolic, whatever you use in your tractor.
Whatever is left in the pump and resevour will mix with the new oil.
I drained the transmission/hydrolics in a 9N this week and found lotsa nasty stuff that looked like something unmentionable and it was still working before I drained it.
I think you will be ok but if you are worried about it flush the case out with diesel or kerosene.

When I was his age I put 3 shotgun shells in the toaster. My dad wasn't too impressed but my mom was happy to get a new toaster. When my son was his age he filled my Montgomery Ward lawnmower with diesel fuel. We both learned from the experience. All's well that ends well. Give your son a big hug.

In my never-to-be humble opinion, it won't hurt it a bit. Tractors are TOUGH and kids are great! You boy is better than I was. I painted my dad's car chinese red with a wisk broom, and he was the town senior clergy, but for a moment, not the most happy one.

TAKE TO ALLIS CHALMERS DEALER; TRACTOR SHOULD
STILL BE UNDER WARRANTY!!! HA! YOU DONT HAVE
ANYTHING TO WORRY ABOUT- EVEN IF IT WAS MORE
THAN WHAT YOU SUSPECT.

I did the same exact same thing to my Dad's Allis about 30 years ago. He just left it and she still runs fine.

Doug- considering the small amount, and the slight difference in oils, I wouldn't worry about it. Even if it was my tractor! Allis's are toouugghh!

Doug: Kids are always great. When my son was this age, I had him playing with his toy tractors in my gravel driveway. I took my eyes off of him and he filled my oil tank (house) filler up with rocks. The pipes were set in 1920 so I could not unscrew them. I then took my shop vac and vacuumed them out. Later I found him by the toilet, with a two D cell flashlight with the 2 D cells missing. Yep, he flushed them. they went through the entire plumbing system, and out to the street with no problems. After this, I kept a closer eye on him, but kids will be kids, and thats why we got them. God bless.
