PTO One Way Clutch Problem

The PTO shaft in my Allis Chalmers 5030 tractor has a One Way Clutch. The part is broken and does not lock the PTO shaft so it doesn't turn. A replacement part costs $1,000 plus labor. That is very tuff to handle. Not sure the exact function of a one-way clutch but would appreciate any advice on what alternative fixes I might try. Could I weld the piece so it is permantly locked? Any assistance would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

A one way clutch allows the pto to free wheel if power to the pto is stopped.(Clutch disengaged, Engine throttled down etc.) Otherwise the pto driven load will try to drive back thru the pto shaft into the tractor, driving the transmission. Not sure if you can weld up the clutch on your tractor but I know that an overrunning clutch is available that slips onto your pto shaft much cheaper than a grand. I am not sure how many HP they are rated for. They are often sold for tractors without live pto to allow the use of bushhog type mowers which will cause the above effect to occur. Check with your implement dealer.

CJ, Thankyou very much for the very informative response. I will definitely search for an over running clutch. Is over running clutch the name a parts person would recognize or does it have a technical name? Also is this a generic part for tractors in general and not Allis Chalmers specific? AC parts sellers know they have us over a barrell and take advantage of that ($1,000 for a one way clutch for example). Again, thanks for the help.

overrunning clutch is the technical name. you have an input shaft and an output shaft. if you turn the input, the output turns also. if you stop the input you can still turn the output (in the same direction). this allows the "slip" or disengage power mode. the cluthc works by having rollers or ball bearings inside that get wedged into a tapered grove and "stick). when the output runs faster than the input, the rollers kickout and will not grab. you can get a generic model that fits many tractors. like mentioned by Cj, just make sure it is rated for enough horsepower to handle your implement. Probably check at the local farm store, etc.
