WD stumps and have a question?

was talking to a guy on the phone about a WD he has for sale. He said the tractor growls or thumps when moving forward, but not in reverse. Any Idea what it could be? Or are there other questions I should ask him to try to help isolate what might be the problem? I'm 150 mile away so I really don't what to look at if this is a major problem.

Sounds serious but you'll also want to check the tin to be sure it isn't rubbing on a tire. My WD45 developed a rhythmic thump while hogging that sounded all the world like a broken leaf spring, especially when turning one direction. Turned out that one of the adjustable rear wheels had slipped and wheel lugs were rubbing on the rear portion of the right fender (had actually bent the bottom six inches over and folded it up on the inside, right along an existing cease so I guess this wasn't the first time the tractor wheel had slipped). I adjusted it back out, added a stop bolt to prevent it from slipping that close to the tin again, pounded the fender back out and ... presto, thump cured.

I agree with Duey. It is likely some of the gears making the noise, which will be costly to fix. I recommend looking for another tractor. FWIW!

Dave,
Probably gear noise, like pitted or broken gear teeth. Moisture in the tranny from a bad rubber boot on the gearshift could cause any number of bad bearings which could cause misalignment of gears. If it is from the final drives it could be bearing problems and/or the bull gear rubbing on the casting. All would be $$$$$$$$$$$$$$

it sounds like the forward gaers going out or throw out baering want throught the preasure plate threre is a look out plate on the bottom of bell houseing take a peak
