Data Plate?

Can Anyone tell me were the data plate is on an older Allis-Chalmers tractor? Is there another way to identify it?

If it was made before about 1960 then you are looking at two different versions. The small tractors B,C,CA do not have a frame. The engine is connected to the transmission with a torque tube that forms the backbone of the tractor. The serial number is next to the shift lever on the trnasmission housing. If it is a bigger tractor like a WC,WD,WD45 then the numbers are on the rear axle around the brake rod.These tractors have a c-channel frame down both sided and in front of the radiator. If the tractor was made after 1960 it may be a "D" series and the serial number is on the engine bellhousing left side back corner of the engine. Narrow it down a little and repost for more help.

ryan, i forgot to mention that there is no data plate. you are looking for numbers punched into the casting. they are about 3/8 inch high numbers. Will start with C,B if by the transmission and WC or WD if on the rear axle.

I think it is older than 1960, the battery uses a positive ground and there is a crank starter on the front of the tractor. It is a large tractor, the thing that Ive never seen is it has only one front wheel (the front end looks like a heavy duty motorcycle style front fork). I will look for the info on the rear axle in the morning. Thanks for the help.

OK, let's identify it ....

(1) Is the seat centered, or is it off-set to the left side? If off-set see #2, if centered see #5.

(2) Does it have hand brakes? If so you have a WC. If not try #3.

(3) Does it have a hand clutch? If so you have a WD or WD45. Go to #4.

(4) Does it have a straight gearshift? If so you have a WD. If not you either have a WD45 or a very late WD. That's as far as I can get you on that set of tractors.

(5) Does it have a bench-type seat? If so you have a C. If it has a spring-loaded seat go to #6.

(6) Is the temperature gauge on the radiator poking through the top of the hood? If so you probably have a CA. If it's in a dash below the steering wheel you probably have a D series tractor - go to #7.

(7) Does it have a straight gearshift close in front of the seat? If so it's probably a D17. If it has a gearshift that curves out from under the seat it may be a D10, D12, D14 or D15. Go to #8.

(8) Is there a hand clutch allowing 2 speed ranges and an iron channel or frame support that runs along the side of the engine? If so you have a D14 or D15 (D17 also has this). If not you have a D10 or D12.

Whew! That's enough for a start. I'll bet you have a WC, WD, or WD45 from your description. Maybe one day I'll make a good key up for these to help ID them. Check the Allis Chalmers Images at the link provided - it may help you find yours. I just don't think the model U, A and other early ACs had a single front wheel option.
