My 52 CA will start and run fine, but is "chugging" a lot, and stalls when I shift into 2nd gear. Could this be condensation in the fuel or something? It only started doing this since the weather has gotten really wet. I was going to put some fuel winterizer/stabilizer in it but not sure if I should now or do something else. Is there a way to drain water out of the tank without running it dry?

Most carburators have a drain, open it and drain some gas into a can or jar and see if there are drops of water in the bottom of the container. This will get any water out of the carb too. Cleaning the fuel filter is a fine idea too as someone suggested. I am not sure if the solid core wires to the plugs are as affected by age is the wires on a car engine. These wires can get porus and short out as dampness gets into them causing an engine to run terrible or not at all, as can a dirty or cracked distrubutor cap.

Check your distributor cap for cracks. Moisture can get inside a distributor and cause havoc. You might try taking if off and drying the inside good to see if it corrects the problem.

you can also get a can of WD 40 at Wal Mart and spray inthe distributor and points. This type of oil will displace water and not hurt the spark system. Your gas tank should have a sediment bowl with screen inside. TAke off the glass and let a cup full of gas drain into a bucket. Do you see any water droplets in it. If not, you dont have a gas problem. Probably is the electrical.

I agree with Steve. Just spray a lot of
WD-40 into the distributor cap and shake out
the excess and put it back on. If that is the
problem, it will give amazing results.

Well funny thing, it starts right up but I haven't tried to shift into 2nd (PUlling heavy load thru deep mud & can't go fast anyway) but it is not chugging anymore. I added some fuel stabilizer and that seemed to help a lot. Thanks for all your suggestions. I lost my dad 6 years ago and he was the world's best mechanic and troubleshooter. But he can't get e-mail wherever he is so, you guys are great!
