I saw a AC CA for sale in the paper. The ad said it had a new 8 volt battery, "what is with that". I have a CA that starts all the time but it just barely turns over.

That's a common way to get a 6 volt system to start easier and faster. Since the charging system is usually set for 7 to 7.3 volts the 8 volt battery will never fully charge, which will mean a shorter life most of the time. But it will make the tractor starter spin faster. I removed the resistor charging/light switch combo and put a 6 volt regulator on my CA with a 6 volt battery - made all the difference in the world for mine. Another warning - that 8 volt will cost you quite a bit since it's not a "normal" battery like a 6 volt or a 12 volt.

Around this area it's golf country. I am close to pinehurst. I worked as a service tech. for Yamaha Golf cart div. we used a lot of 8-volt batteries to replace the sixes. With high speed gears we could make a electric cart with 6-8volts do 40 mph and still have plenty of torque. There is people down here with garages built just for there cart. I have installed radios heaters and every kind of light you could think of. I have also took brand new carts out of the box,cut them in half and stretched them like limos. And they say tractor guys are addicted.. Jonathan (JJK Tractor Salvage)

Someone probably put the 8v battery in the CA to give the starter a little more oomph. If that's the case, I'd say that the starter is getting weak and is due for a rebuild.
