What are the advantages and disadvantages of a wide front, gas D-17 vs a wide front, gas WD-45 for baling hay? Thanks.

Well I perfer the 45 because I spent a lot of time on one as a kid. However both are fine tractors, and both are orange so you can't loose!Check them both out and get what you like.

I never ran a D-17 but my neighbor has been running his 336 JD baler on a WD-45 for a couple of years now. He used to use a Deutz 68 06 but had to look back all the time. With the WD-45 he flips the seat to the right side and leans against the left fender. He then can adjust the kicker with the hydraulics with the lever mounted below him on the left fender. It works pretty good. I spent most of my summer on the ole' 45 and loved every second of it!!!

I appreciate the input. I guess I lean toward a D-17. If nothing else, WD-45's seem to be getting scarce.

The D17 will have a "shift-on-the-go" of two different speeds with the power director, while the WD45 only has a hand clutch. THis may or may not mean anything to you. The D17 was more powerful - about 50 hp versus 43 for the WD45, but both will handle an regular square baler nicely.

The main difference is the seating arrangement - if you're more comfotable on one than the other buy it. Of course, if it's a D17 Series IV it has live pto (if I remember correctly) so that would be a big plus.

I know the D-17's I've seen had one form of live pto or another, but I've always been foggy about the WD-45's. They had some sort of provision for that too, didn't they? Or were they like the Farmall H's, where the main clutch dropped everything and you had to shift into neutral to let the baler or whatever run by itself?

The hand clutch on the 45 gave the same effect as the Live PTO and same for the Power Director on the 17. The old ROTO-Balers had to have LPTO to work right. Leave Your foot off the foot clutch on either one You'll be O-K. I spent a LOT of time as a Kid pulling an IH 55-T baler with Neighbor's WD-45 and D-17. But I really Liked His D-19! It was narrow front end and would get a little light in the front on hills if they were steep enough! Quite a Horse!

I think you would like the D17 better because of the fact you can change speeds on the go,more power, plus better steering and clutch operation.
