C slow turning over

Bought a C a few weeks ago. Just got a rebuilt carb for it. Put a brand new 6V battery on it, cleaned all the terminals and connections. Turns over slowly and drains battery quickly. I havent been able to get it to start yet because I don't think it's turning over fast enough to pull fuel through the manifold. Checked plugs and they are dry. I think I know now why people change over to 12v system. I have replaced points, rotor, cond. plugs and am getting spark. I have a John Deere A and I know it takes a lot of throttle and a fairly quick turn over to get her started. Any ideas ? Thanks Tom

My C had the same problem. I put a 12 V. Battery in it and will never look back! LOL. If you have coil ignition and don't want to redo your charging system you can get an 8 V. battery . It will spin your starter faster but your charging system will have enough output to maintain a charge in it. Thought I would pass this good advice that was given to me but I couldn't use along. I didn't have access to an 8V. battery when I finally reached my decision( Got PI**ed at it!)But remember tractors that had them when I was a kid and it worked good.

Like the others said, the starter is probably tired; take it and get it checked out. 6v systems need a little TLC to keep operating in top condition. The only thing the 12v conversion will do is put off the inevitable repairs your starter probably needs.

One more thing: use only zero- or one-gauge battery cables! If you are using regular car-type(i.e. two-gauge) battery cables, you will not get enough juice to the starter to spin it over quickly enough. NAPA has 'em.

Converted my 42 C from 12 back to 6v, had the same problem, rebuilt starter (not cheap) and works great.

I agree the starter is probably getting tired. Make sure the timing is right on, that will help even if it cranks slow. You can also take the cable off the starter and jump your truck battery (12v) straight to the starter. If you have a distributor, leave it connected to the 6v battery for the test. Dont connect the 12v to anything but the starter solenoid terminal.(and tractor frame)

your brushs in the startes may be drity or worn out. You should have it tested.
