D10/D12: 2 Questions

Hi,
I'm looking for a smaller tractor that will run a three point rotary tiller. I like the D10/D12 models. Do they have a low enough first gear to run slow enough for one of these? And, do these models have a live PTO? I'd like to know your suggestions on this. Thanks in advance,

D-10 after SN 3501 and D-12 after SN 3001 have true independent PTO and hydraulics. The change to independent PTO came in mid-1961 and includes all Series II and III machines as well as a few late Series I. 1st gear with the 4-speed is fairly low, but you'd probably need to slip the main clutch for rototilling. Some Series III tractors had a 2 range auxilary transmission thal might give you a lower 1st gear.

RMD, thanks for the reply. It's hard to find this kind of info, but it's needed to make good judgements about tiller applications.
Seems like the garden tractors and compact/ subcompact Japanese tractors are best suited for the low speed requirements of a tiller. That is unless you get into a newer farm sized tractor with lots of gearing. I want a vintage tractor, its classic looks and decent price, but I want it to be useful too. Guess I can't have it all, huh?

Bill, the D-10 we just got has a very slow 1st gear which would lend itself to tilling. Ours is a series III with live independant PTO. We are just getting into AC collecting/refurbishing after dealing with JD, IH, and Ford for a while, We are impressed, musta been some real boneheads running AC, 'cause the engineers sure had their stuff together! They are simple and easy to work on, and have many features others don't! Pete

Thanks for the reply Pete,

The only thing I'm not sure of now is if the series III is the only version of teh D10/D12 that is geared low enough (dual range trans?). And if the series I and II don't have the IPTO, I guess they wouldn't be the best choice, huh?

Mine does not have the hi-lo tranny, not sure about the Series I and II and LPTO, will check my book tomorrow and get back to ya!
