D-17 voltage regulator

I just put a voltage regulator on my D-17 ,the voltage regulator that I put on was a after market one that I got from Napa ,
The old voltage regulator had 4 stake on terminals the new old only had 3 so I double up the battery and the ignition everything seem to be working ok.But now the tractor seems like it is not running as strong in the field.
Also the amp meter on the tractor keeps jumping back and forth between 0&15 and some times 15&30 it never settle down.
The battery is good and I had the generator check out and it was good to.
So what is wrong with this thing?

you probably have a series I. after that they changed to the 3 terminal regulator. the generator stays the same. I would guess you just got a couple terminals mixed. what you need to do is eliminate the 4th wire, not tie it in. also when going to the three wire system, the regulator has its own ground. here is the story if i can get it right.
original
B- to battery
F - to field on generator
G -to Armature on generator
L- switched voltage (key)

new wiring with 3 terminals
B- to battery (same
F- to field terminal on generator (same)
G- to armature terminal on generaotr

the L wire is probably black and you can eliminate it. make sure you put the regulator G terminal to the generator A terminal. hope that takes care of it. also note that the new regulator MUST be bolted (grounded ) to the motor or frame to work. might want to clean off the paint or could run a seperate wire if needed. the original reg did not need a ground.

So you think that the L&B hooked togather is my problem.Should I just run the the L wire to the battery?

there is no L wire on a three prong regulator system. just take the L wire and tape up the end. or go back to the key switch and cut it off. does no good at all. i believe if you have the armature terminal of the generator on the A or G terminal of the regulator, and have not got it confused with the L wire, then your problem is bad grounding of the regulator. they will jump around and charge funny with bad ground.

RAT- leave your e-mail and i can send you a schematic if a generator and 3 terminal regulator. Has a cut away view showing the internal wiring. --- Also, you know your generator is 12 volt positive ground. The new regulator should be for positive ground, or universal type (pos or neg). there should be a tag on the regulator, or an attached sheet saying this. also it will tell you to short two terminals together to "polarize" it. that tells the regulator that you have neg or positive ground.
