Restoring a 49 AC B and pretty sure something is wrong with the mag. When I first got it it started fine. Then just quit and wouldn't start, once in a while it starts. No spark when not starting. Suggestions?

Does anyone know where I can get the mag rebuilt? Or get a kit to do it myself? In canada?

Thanks

Most generally it's the points are dirty. Take the points out of the mag, check their condition. I've seen newly rebuilt mags get placed on the shelf while the rest of the tractor restoration was tended to fail to spark when finally put on the tractor. Mag points have to be in better condition (electrically) than the points of electric distributors! I usually clean them with a file (never sand paper or emery cloth) and polish them on a piece of hard wood or with a buffing wheel & then solvent. For cleaning film & light corrosion a clean but dull file often works well. Wire wheels leave a metal film on the points that soon oxidizes & the mag will quit again fairly soon.

Good luck.

Try cleaning the points. When they set around for a while they get a coating of some kind which will make then act up. I have bought a couple of bad magnetos and after cleaning the points they had a good hot spark.
