I think my flywheel thingie gets stuck (Bear with me, I'm female and blonde) When I bought this tractor the guy said it (starter? flywheel?) gets stuck sometimes and he just reaches in and yanks it loose somewhere inside where the belts are up front. So of course it stuck on me and I can't jiggle it loose. My neighbor says to get a crank and turn it enough to loosen up so the starter will do its thing. Right now when I hit the starter, it grinds badly. He said it might have a bad tooth on the flywheel and depending on the position when the engine stops will determine if you need to play with it to start it. Does this make any sense? So I guess I would like to get a crank but don't know where to get one. Please help!!!

You might want to pull the starter and check the bendix spring. a weak or broken spring is a comman problem with this series tractor. the crank can be manufactured from a peice of 3/4 round stock bent and a 1/4 inch pin welded into it. good luck My CA is very dificult to start with a crank.

Yes, the gear teeth on the flywheel can become worn in certain places. The engine tends to stop in certain places so when you start it the starter gear jumps forward and engages the flywheel in the same places, wearing them out sooner than other less abused places. By turning the engien a little you get by the bad place and once the two gears are engaged they work OK. You can also move the engine a little by rocking the tractor with it in 4th gear. Do it with the ignition OFF. This won't work if you are parked on rough ground, only smooth. If the tractor will roll on its own let it do so and with it in gear,3 or 4, lit the cluthc out. This will move the engine, and maybe start it if the ignition is on. Try to park on hills so you can do this, saves having to crank engine or rock tractor.

One question, what does being blond have to do with it?? The only place here where color matters is the tractor and you have that right.

Well the tractor is parked on a level spot, could I just tug it a little with my truck? I knew I could start it by pushing or letting it roll downhill but unfortunately no hills around! Of course I could put that darn draft horse to work and make him pull it for me..... thanks for the advice, I'll try it. Is that a major fix to get repaired?

You'll have to split the tractor to replace the flywheel. :-(

Laura,

I think from your description you must turn the engine to a new spot on the flywheel. I sometimes do this by grabbing the fan and turn it a little but be sure the ignition is of and some times you have to hold a little extra tension on the belt to turn the engine. Sorry I can't help you with a crank. Good Luck!
