D-17 generator

The generator on my D-17 is no longer puting out power.I have never had to work on one before ,but i say it probably like a alternator.probably all it needs is some new brush's.Am I close to being right on this?

Well I check out the voltage regulator and it seemed ok.It looks like the generator is bad .If I put a volt meter across the F &G terminals on the generator should I not get some voltage out of it? Well I did this and all I got was 3volts.
So I took the generator off and looked at it I took it a part and the brushes look good.But the in side of the generator was full of dust and dirt and it look like the winedings and the armicker were got making connection
Now you say how did all this dust and dirt get in there,well I think it is because some one was put on a after market power steering pump.(that bolts to the back of the generator)so now there is no dust shield on the back of the generator..
I have not around at putting it back on let. I will get back with you and tell you if it works now.

Put you meter on DC volts...put one lead to ground and then check your F and G terminals. The F terminal should be about 9-12 volts and G or armature shoulf be at about 13+ at idle.

your generator should have two terminals, field and "A" or "G" which is called the armature or generator terminal. I also assume you system is still positive ground. To test a generator you can ground the "F" terminal and run the G or "A" terminal directly to the ampmeter and back to the battery. The generator will now put out full current (maybe 20 amps) you can run like this for 15 or 20 minutes, but probably need just 2 minutes to test and see if it works. If you get 20 amps then you know your regulator is the problem, not the generator. If no current output then the generator is bad. Also, if the regulator is bad you can get one for a 1959 chevy at auto zone for $20. part number is Wells VR605. The alternator conversion is good consideration if the generator is toast. Remember all alternators run negative ground. Battery terminals will need to be switch.

Not all alternators have negative ground. My dad's AC 170 gas tractor had an alternator with positive ground. I remember working on the wiring.

the 170 should have had a delco alternator with an external voltage regulator. it should have been 12 volt negative ground.

Mark,
You are probably right. New brushes are likley in order, although the problem also could be the regulator or something else. Dig in and find out, you can always hire a pro. Post enough of your findings and ask the questions. Somebody here will probably have the answer. Duey

oriellys auto parts has a 60 amp one wire gm alternator for $65 lifetime warranty and with just a little work will fit real nice.I just put one on an A2 Gleaner last week. As far as your generator I would take it to a professional.I have tried to rebuild them and they never lasted very long
