How do I go about replacing my starter? And what do I tell a parts house Im looking for as far as a replacement. Symtoms are a clicking noise when I try to start it. But not a rapid clicking like a bad battery. Just a single click from the starter silinoid which I replaced and it still makes the same noise. Would you replace starter or is there another alternative. Thank you Farmer John

Check your terminals from battery and starter. may just be a loose connection or corroded terminal. Feel the wires wiggle them and bend them around to see if the large wires are broken under the insulation. Bad connections will give you a click and no spin on starter. As the saying goes clean, bright, an tight Good luck and let us know how u make out.

Hey John, I don't know what kind of starter you have but I would try a starter solenoid. That's the thing that you use to pick up the starter with. Looks like a little bitty starter hooked to the big un. They are usually around $15-$20. It depends on the size tractor and scarcity of the parts and such. You probably have a starter rebuilding shop fairly close to you. I have at least 2 within 25 miles. Those guys can usually tell ya the problem and fix it up pretty fast. Hope this helps you.

does the starter turn? if not try shorting across the two big connections on the back of the solenoid,this should let the starter turn without engaging.if it does'nt spin theres a starter problem. if does spin solenoid is bad. but make sure tractor is out of gear first . just because something is new does'nt mean it is good. I have bought solenoids that were bad and starters too.
