I have a AC that I think is a late 50's or early 60's D series. I do not know where to find SN or how to read SN to determine year and model of my tractor. This tractor has been in use untill last week, the distributor quit turning. Any help?

the D series has the serial number on the engine -bell housing, left rear corner where engine bolts to the clutch housing. the serial number will start with D12 or D14, etc. the numbers after the model will give you the serial number and we can get the manufactured date from that.

Thanks Steve, the tractor is 60 miles from here so will be weekend before I can look for numbers.
Any ideals on what to look for on trouble with distributor, looks like may run off goveror system from front of engine. The distributor looked ok, the worm gear that drives it was not turning.

the distributor sets in a cone shaped casting/housing that bolts to the engine front gear housing. this housing has a gear and shaft inside that is driven from the crankshaft. You are right, the gear is called "governor and distributor drive gear". The governor centrifugal mechanism and cast round housing bolt onto the front and point toward the radiator. The distributor drive housing (the cone shaped casting) faces toward the rear of the engine. there is a small drive gear, shaft and bushing in the housing to drive the distributor. If you look down the distributor hole and turn the engine over, you should see the gear move. It sounds like yours does not turn??? This small gear and shaft is pinned to the bigger drive gear mentioned above. What you need to do is remove the cone shaped housing that the distributor slides into and see why the small gear in not pinned to the bigger drive gear. This assumes that the gear train on the front of the engine is intact and the crank, camshaft and distributor drive gear are all still in mesh.
