Just a dumb question- but something I keep noticing:

If the company is Allis CHAL-mers, then why do 90% of the folks you see on the classic tractor show & pull videos always seem to say Allis CHAM-lers?

You would think folks with brand loyalty to the orange would at least get the name right!

a lot of it is due to regional dialects too. . around here i have heard a few of the old folks and my self too pronounce corn ;kern;. a lot of the people are told it is pronounced one way or another. some pronounce it both ways according to who they are talking to or from. around my tiny area the L is silent. like everything else , it really doesnt matter unless you are a school teacher who gets their jollies correcting someone. as for me the tractors and equipment i love is allis cham ers. i think when they started adding the L is when the company went bankrupt !!=)i also wear over hauls and have bob wire on the fences! plus it also depends on how well everything is working. if it is a bad day then several of the pronounciations cant be repeated online!!!!

I've never heard it pronounced wrong in this area. But I can't believe how many people refer to smoke coming out of a "chimbly". Then there was the old neighbor about 25 years ago who was proudly showing me his recently acquired "Santa Lacrudis" cows. Come to think of it, that did flow off the tongue better than "Santa Gertrudis".

Those must have been some funny cows!

The thing that tickled me... on one of those aforementioned classic tractor videos, the guy said that his tractor was designed to run on "dissilent" (meaning, I think, distillate)

I'd like to know where you could buy a gallon of that stuff. (grin)

Everyone I have ever met in the South said "Allis-Chal-mers." I never heard anyone say differently.

I always thought this was done by the same people who can't spell or pronounce transmission so somehow it became a tranny.

I saw an ad the other day for an Alise Shalmer. I guess this falls in the same category. If you are a true Allis Chalmers fan, you would learn to pronounce it correct. Typing on the other hand, well, we see it all dont we?

Oh, for cripes sake, it's bad enough that the correct police have their nose up everyone's hiney about everything from the perfect shade of Persian Orange to nit-picking about whether a flat-top AC oil filter has a crimped rim or not: now the anal-retentive patients from the Noah Webster ward at the state hospital have internet access. (I thought this sort of stuff usually mattered only to the green and yellow tractor guys.) After what Osama butt Laden did the other week, I'd think people would have a better sense of priorities of what to get all exercised about.

I assume that your barb about "anal-retentive Noah Webster types, etc." was directed at me;

However, let me point out to you that had we "anal-retentive" types been in charge of those "flying" schools, the whole "Butt" Laden thing might not have come about because had four swarthy men with Arabic names walked into my flying school stating that they were not interested in "taking off" or "landing" the plane, but only in "flying" it, I would have been on the phone to the FBI the next minute!! Maybe the color "green" means different things to different people??

I wasn't trying to start any stuff- I just thought it was odd that so many folks made this same mistake. (at least the ones on tractor pull videos.)

I thought maybe the pronunciation was a regional thing... started by a dyslexic A-C dealer way back in the day. (grin)

Just for the record, I don't call my tractor a Casey, or paint it with "Flamboo" Red, either.

It's not too funny, but around here there are any number of people who think it's "ALICE CHAMBERS"!
You see this all the time in auction listings and in local 4sale ads. I can't imagine where these mispronunciations take hold. Heck, they painted the correct name on the equipment. Do you suppose this is another failing of our education system?

Mike,

Probably for the same reason they pronounce the word "diesel" as "DEE-ssohl" (with a hard S) instead of the way it's supposed to be: DEE-zehl, with a soft S (as in "rose"). Everytime one of those guys on the videos (truck or tractor shows) says deessuhl, I wince (and I'm sure Rudi Diesel would, too, if he were still among us). Some people are either illiterate or just don't want to take the time to learn the correct pronunciation of a word or name, and then there are those who emulate those illiterate TV news people and learn how to mispronounce words like the Ebola virus (thus calling it ee-BOE-luh instead of the correct pronunciation of EH-bo-la, with a short "e" and the accent on the first syllable.
