Can power steering be added to CA ? If so how ?

I've not done this but I was investigating it. It would take a fair amount of work which I don't mind at all but it would also take a fair amount of modification to the tractor. I would use a pump off of a chevy s-10 pickup. you can get these at the junkyard pretty cheap. Look in the late 80's, the pump is compact, and has a reservoir on it and uses a v-belt yet. The power unit itself can be a Char-Lynn torque generator. They are kind of pricey but they are good. There is some information a few posts down from this. THey go in the steering column and therein lies the problem. I wouldn't want to put it out in the open, I would want to put it under the gas tank but I'm not sure there would be room. you would have to weld up some kind of mounting brackets for it too because it needs some kind of support. That's the trouble with the CA, there isn't much room. On the WD, it's easier because the steering column is longer and more accessible. I think that if I were going to do it on a CA, I wouldn't use the CHar-lynn unit but rather a power gear box off of a ranger or s-10. I would take the stock gear box and column and set them aside in case you ever want to go back original. I was hoping that a compact power gear box would fit under the gas tank. I could then fabricate my own steering column (inner and outer) and use the S-10 or Ranger pitman arm too and the stock steering wheel from the CA. This would also give the stock steering box "a rest" since they were pretty marginal in the first place. I spent considerable time rebuilding my stock steering box (it holds 90 weight now) and also rebuilding the front end and adding some grease fittings. It steers better but it's a long way from power steering. Allis must have used a strange ratio or something because I've got an old F12 Farmall and you can turn it with one hand and very little effort. Hope this helps, Kent
