D12 brake linings

I have just inherited the use and mantinence of my neighbor's D12. At the age of 61, he died and I lost the voice of experience I came to depend on. His D12 needs brakes so I ordered linings for it because the parts house said they could not get the complete shoes. I didn't think anything about it because my neighbor had talked about relining brakes in his youth and it wasn't hard. I have been told by a couple of people since I ordered the linings that you needed special tools to press the rivets on . IS this the case or can I do this at home. Can anyone help me with this problem? Thank you, in advance Jerry Davis

If you're good with tools, you can do it. Put a punch in a vise and you can carefully peen out the rivet with a hammer. It's just awkward to try to hold everything in place at once. I keep around a few pairs of relined brake shoes done by a local brake shop for whenever I might need a set for my tractors; if you are interested in these, just email me directly. Also, if you have the brake pads and everything else, you might find a local garage or brake shop with an old rivet press that might be willing to do it for you, but the brake shoe is so small that most places nowadays won't touch it.

Thank you Paul, I know of one old shop where the owner has told me of turning cranks in the vehicle .In other words, he has been around awhile. If he does not have a press, I will give it a shot myself. I am not too bad with tools and have enjoyed working on all types of machines since I was a teen, but at 34 I still consider myself green. If I screw up these shoes, I will mail you about the ones you have. Jerry
