Head Problems? on my B

Hi gang, I've had a busy summer at work and family so I haven't been on the Net much. Just thought I'd say I'm still reading the posts, I particularly like the assembly info Dick L is putting up. I'm starting to put it back together, and this comes in mighty handy. I just got my (new used, not cracked) final drive housings back from the hot tank, prior to installing all new bearings (2 sets of finals, one good bearing and 0 good races between the 16 possibles of each. Ouch!). I power washed my trans, discovered the side cover cracked (explains the drip), and will be pulling the PTo unit to fix the loose mainshaft bearings. I should have just sold the darn thing but at least I now have a lot of neat new tols (including the homemade 2 1/4" wrench for the axle nuts).

Now my problems.

I put my (rebuilt)head on my B, installed a different (good used) rocker shaft assembly, and discovered that one valve is badly off center to the rocker (like almost to the edge of the rocker). The rocker is up against the pedestal so no way to center it without bending. The wear on the original rocker indicates this was present before the head was rebuilt too. Is this going to be a problem?

Also, I dummyed up the valve cover and found one end will sit nice but the other does not compress the gasket at all. I'm planning to put a bead of silicone on top of the gasket and screwing her down, but isn't this unusual? Especially since it had the oil trough underneath the pedestals when I tore it down (I thought this was only present on combine engines but everything else has been swapped around on this '39), and I left it off for reassembly?

Lend me your expertise!

The exaust and intake rochers are different. Some rockers are marked exaust or intake and some are not. If you are shy one let me know and I will get one to you.

I have to leave now but will be back later

I will set up a head and rocker assembly tomorrow evening and take some pictures. You might be able to hammer out the valve cover to make it fit. I have streightened out some pretty crappy ones and made them work.

I rechecked and the rockers are in the right sequence. No shims under the pedestals, and the valve cover is actually very straight.

The intake valve on #2 is apparently 1/8" too far forward, like the core shifted on casting. THe guide is nice and the valve is tight, and the valve tip is still on the rocker, just off to one side. I can see the same contact patch on the one I took off, which had some exhaust rockers on intakes (but not this particular hole).

I'll probalby push out the valve cover at the stud and try to get it to sit down more. I'll still use the silicone on top - I learned this trick on Chevys, it seems to keep them from leaking as bad as normal.

Be careful when you silicone that valve cover gasket!I bought a restored '34 Chev truck and the previous owner siliconed all the gaskets and I think he used a cheap grade.Oil and gas started to attack the stuff and have had problems with oil and gas passages plugging up.Use the stuff sparingly and you should be OK.Just my 2 cents.
