I have a wd that has been converted to 12v. I have found carbon tracking down the sides of the plug wire terminals on the inside of the cap (magneto style). I just replaced the cap and rotor for the same reason not long ago. I just put on new plug wires (but mabey too late?). Any ideas as to why this has happened again? The coil wire is bolted on from the outside of the cap, drilled through cap and secured with bolt. I'm not sure this is the proper way to convert to 12v or if it even is causing any problems. I'm also wondering if it would just be easier to switch to a distributor and if so, how easy is it to do and availability of parts?

Your putting too much voltage to your coil and points. Go to Pep-boys and buy a voltage reducing ceramic resistor and put in line with your hot lead from the ignition switch. Any of the old car types with leads will work just fine. ie, say one for a 74' Land Rover. I bet the plastic cam rider for your points is melted also. You won't believe the difference it will make.

Mark;
They r right, but if it has am outside coil take it off and go 2 a junk yard and get u a coil off a 74 or 5 or 6 or 7 ford the coil goes from 12 v in to 3.5 v out u do not need any thing else as 4 the cerrect voltage. As 4 it missing on #1 check and make sure that it has the cerrect fireing order
it is 1-2-4-3 on a wd45

If you want to have your magneto rebuilt to a good working magneto you could get in touch with Mark's Magneto Service
395 South Burnham hwy.
Lisbon, Ct 06351 860-887-1094

They do magnetos from all over the country and do a good job.

Dick and Dewy are right--- a mag has an internal cooil and does not need to be connected to the battery to run. If you can see a round coil with power wire from the battery and signal wire going into the mag, then your system has been converted over and is non production. You may have an external coil and they are using your magnito as a distributor. You need a 12 volt external coil, or a new internal coil for the mag.

Mark,
Sounds like you are putting 12 volts through a 6 volt coil. The high voltage will be tremendous and hard to control like you describe. A resister to reduce the voltage into the coil may solve the problem but at best this hybrid system will give you problems.

The external coil being used has internal balast so it is only 6v at this point. I cleaned up the cap with a small grinder today at work at tractor is running again but only on three cylinders as it always has. It misses on cyl #1. I checked compression cold 145 psi and hot 120 psi. All cylinders are at about 120 psi with hot engine. I pulled #1 plug and cranked engine over-there is a decent spark jumping the plug gap. I haven't had time to check valve clearence yet but I am assuming cylinder is lean. I have to run engine at almost full choke to keep running. Carb has been taken apart-no obvious problems found exept for the fact that one mounting ear was previously broken off. The manifold appears to be original and so severely rusted I can't tell if there are any cracks by visual inspection. I tried propane tested for vacuum leaks but with the fan blowing it was of no use. I guess I'll have to remove the fan and recheck. I'm temped to just by an new carb and manifold, even if just to prevent eventual problems with these components. Any other suggestions before I spend a bunch of money? Unfortunately I only have a few weeks to correct this problem until I close on my new house and become poor again, not to mention winter is coming and this tractor is my means of clearing a 2000 foot long driveway. Thanks for all the help so far,I don't know what I'de do without you kind folks.

Mark,

The symptoms you describe sound an awful lot like a leaking manifold (erosion around the exhaust port may have extended into the intake port on your #1, better check your #4 too). Normal procedure is to weld up the eroded areas and grind back flat. I didn't have a welder and didn't want to pull the head to have it welded so I removed the manifold and used muffler patch (the stuff in a tube, not the band-aide) and built up the eroded area. flattened with a file and re-mounted the manifold with new gaskets. That was a year ago and the patch has held together fine.

Good luck.

Are you saying that an automotive coil is on the out side of the magneto with the coil wire entering the magneto through a drilled hole, with a wire from the switch to the coil.

If that is what someone has done they are using the old magneto as a distributor. I have bought two non running tractors that was set up like this. I bought good magnetos for them before getting them back in running condition.
