Help! Which Brush Hog for AC Model C?

I just bought a 1952 "C". It is a smaller tractor with (I'm guessing) 30-40HP. It has a 3pt hitch, but I have been told that I should not use a 3pt. brush hog, instead I need a pull-behind or trailer type. I have pastures to mow and just don't know what to do! Does anyone use a 3pt with this size tractor? It has narrow front end so maybe my friends are just concerned that I will flip it (being a blonde and all).

i would guess that if you have only grass to mow a belly mower would do you a better job my c has a 6 foot belly mower under it and does a super job on my pasture grass and also my kids can mow with it much less chance of tipping it over. also it looks rellay good that way.

Are you sure you have a 1952? If it is then you would have a CA Allis. The CA does have a bit more power and weight than a C.

Your friend is wise to caution you! There is a inherent concern with rowcrop tractors tipping on rough terrain. Be very sure if you buy a brush hog for that tractor that you buy an overrunning PTO adapter for it. The stored energy in the flywheel of that brushhog will push that old tractor a LONG ways! You will not be able to stop it as the PTO is geared to the transmission and will continue to turn the wheels even after you push in the clutch and step on the brakes. The over running clutch will allow the hog to free wheel and save you from a nasty accident! As far as how much hog to buy I would not recommend anything larger that 4-5' unless you are NEVER going to mow anything heavier than grass. An A-C 'C" is rated at abbt. 18 hp on the PTO. The idea of a pull type is a good one as a"C" is light in the front end.It will flip over backwards real easy with the weight of ANYTHING on the three point. Be careful! So endeth my sermon! Seriously , Be careful! My Allis C would not be my first choice for a tractor to hog with!

the three point is not original equipment. many companies make aftermarket units. i built my own for a C, and we used it on a 6 ft blade and small lift beam. It will probably handle 800 pounds. much more and the front end will lift. a better guess is 600 pounds. you could use a rear 3 point, but most people use a 72 inch belly mower (i do), or a pull type as you mention. If you use a 3 point mower, i would look for a light duty type one and keep the weight down. The tractor has more in the 20-22 HP range.
