i just bought a b with a new wood 6' belly mower yesturday at an auction i have a few questions on it i would like to find the year of it were is the serial number located it has the rear end out of a c in it so i need to find some thing on the front half to tell the year also the hyd on the mower will not hold the mower in the air if i lift it up with in a few min. it is on the ground is this the cylonder the pump or is the mower just to heavy for it

the engine number is cr 46800 if i go buy how many tractors were made it would make it a 1940 does that sound right

Your close. The B was started in 1937 and used a BE engine till 1940. Starting in 1940 the brought the C into production and the B started using the same engine about that time, a CE instead of a BE. In 1940 the built 16,000 B, in 1941=7,000, in 1942=8,000 in 1943=10,000. The C tractors started with 1941=100 and in 1942 about 12,000. Of course these are only approx, but by adding up the numbers i would guess you are closer to 1943. If it was built during the war it might have some other neat stuff. Originally it might have had steel rear wheels.

The serial # would be on the shifter part of the tork tube. It will start with a "b" then some #'s. If the rear end was changed to the "c" rear it will be in the same place with it starting with a "c". I don't know any thing that will help age it as to a year other than the early ones had a different engine. Hand brakes were on both units and would be replaced with the rear. As to the hydro lift depending on the unit weight, it may not be able to lift the mower. I have a plow and the pump and hydro do just fine. I would have the pump repaired if it's bad. It costs alot more to replace the pump. I hope this helps ED
