Does anyone know why the 45 head is taller than the WD head, what the differences are other than being taller? Just courious.

Actually, the "tall" head was introduced on the WD back in 1950 with engine serial #289001. The plug is placed nearer the center of the cylinder and the intake ports and runners are larger. The larger head also flows more water so I assume cools better? The "tall" head has "short" rocker pedestals and the "short" head has "tall" rocker pedestals.

I have engine no 284534, short head which I think is original. This was on tractor WD77470, a 1951 I believe. Could the change have been later?

Tom, You're absolutely right. I was talking "off the top of my head" and that's a dangerous thing when you get to be my age. 1951 production began with Tractor #072328. I have your tractor and engine serial #s which is the earliest '51 that I have both #s for, so far..... I have a '51 (originally my dad's) with engine #309267 and it has the tall head. Will the tall head give a significant increase in power over the short head? I am putting a 45 crank in a WC and wondered if a tall head would help the power?
