D14 Starter

Had my D14 for 5 years - last week the starter would not stay engaged. I took it out and found the nose housing broken. I started searching for parts and found confusion.

My tractor is Serial 4309 - a Mid '57 D14 so it started life as 6 Volt. Someone changed it to 12 volt and changed the starter to 12 Volt. The starter in it now is a Delco 1107265 which is listed as a D10 starter. The I&T manual lists several starters for D14 and some of the old posts here say there are different ring gears. The parts sources list several different starter drives also. When I look at the starter drive on the one I removed, it appears the ring gear has been touching the hub of the starter gear, makes me wonder if this is the right match of tractor model, ring gear, starter and Bendix drive.

Can anyone out there help me find a way to sort this out?

I have a '57 D-14 that has been converted to 12 volt. We still use the original 6 volt starter, primarily because of the difference in the "noses." We have had very few problems, just don't run the starter a long time when cranking. If the tractor is properly tuned up it should only need a very brief "crank" to get it started.

Joe,
I have a '59 D14 that also busted the nose off the original 6v starter. I converted to 12v & bought a 12v replacement starter & found that the nose was "longer" on the 12v. I search a day for used nose & finally found one at a very wise old neighbor's. He took it from and old JD dozer starter and it matched almost exact...I had to drill one small hole for a dowel and it fit like the original...hope this helps some...Mike
