I have an AC616 with a 16.5 hp Onan. I've recently re-set the points gap, adjusted the carb (fast & slow idle), cleaned the plugs, re-set the intake & exhaust valves and done just about everything else. For some reason, when I give it full throttle or even half throttle with the blades engaged and mow heavy grass, it wants to choke down blow black smoke out. It's very difficult to cut with now.

I'm thinking the butterfly or carb jet might be out. I would appreciate any insight or advice someone would have regarding this issue.

Thanks for any help, Matt

Matt,

I had similar symptoms on my tractor (all summer). I just solved the problem last week, and it was spark plug wires crossed (#2 & #3). Basically, the tractor was running on 3 cylinders. It idled fine and ran fine w/o a load, but once I put a load on the tractor, it sputtered and missed, just like you say. Also blew whitish/black smoke from the unburnt gas. I know it sounds simple, but it always is something stupid/simple. Don't overlook the obvious.

Matt

I know basic, but you did not mention. Have you replaced the air filter?
