If it is possible, how do you install it? Is there a pump driven by the fan belt? Where can one get one of these units? Thanks.

It is very possible but salvage parts are scarce. What you need is called a torque generator that is installed into a removed section of the steering shaft. A bracket secures the torque generator to the tractor frame. Rotational force from the steering wheel goes into one end of the unit and an increased amount of torque comes out the other end of the unit. These units are manufactured by Char-Lynn(now Eaton) and Dan Foss. Any 1000psi hydarulic pump can be made to work with these units. I am not aware of any ready made off the shelf power steering kits any more. Tractor Supply used to sell a bunch of them. There are some good postings at Allis Chalmers.com on this subject. I am currently working on this project on my WD45.

I bought a unit a while back for my WD. I believe it is from a D-17. I have not installed it yet. A gentleman mailed me a diagram from the manual on how to do a WD45. I does not look a be to much of a headache at all. That is my winter project.

You will probably have a hard time finding the PS units that were offered on the later WD 45's. But if you were to find one installing the pump and motor would be fairly easy. I'm sure some other type of power steering could be rigged up to work, but it won't be origional.
