H4 dozer fluid

I need to change the torque housing fluid on my H4 and i don't know what to use.My aftermarket manual says "type A" ATF but all i can find is type F or dextron. and also the all purpose ATF at farm stores. can someone help? Thanks,Steve

Hello, I am new to this bb and don't know what I am doing, (as you can tell). I was wondering if someone could please tell me where I could look for parts for an Allis-Chalmer 605 wheel loder. My son is looking for the gear on the end of the axle, the housing. The brass shaft that holds the gears in place. He said it has three shafts and three gears. I sure hope someone knows what I am looking for (I sure don't)lol. I just tried to put down what he said. Any information on where I might look for parts would be appreciated. We live in Arkansas.

The 605 was made for many years. Its axles were not made by allis chalmers. We bought axles from several manufactures in the 1970's and installed in the loaders. (Allis may have made their own axles in the late 60's im not sure). You might look at the axle and see if it was made by Rockwell International, etc. The construction division of AC was sold to Fiat Allis about 1973. You might find a local Fiat Allis dealer if they are still around, or look on the web at IBDOZING.com and talk to those guys to get some ideas, or you might be able to get parts from a big truck dealership, etc. Anyone who sell large axles. Like i said you will have to get the axle model number to figure out who made it and what you have.

steve, thanks for the quick reply. My son is out with his (Big Burtha) as he calls it. when he gets back i will pass the information on. This is his first wheel loader, he is trying to learn about it. sure is an expensive lesson though. Thanks again. Angilee

Steve; I have a HD4 and I changed to tractor trans. hyd oil, it's doing ok. I read somewhere I read that's it is the same as type A but no red dye. I'm looking for a set of good used tracks do you know of any around ??? Tom

Steve, type F was used in all ford cars and trucks for years till the mid 1980's. Type A was used by chrysler and general motors in the 1950-60 era. After that GM switched to Dextron then II then III. In the late 1980 or 90's both ford and GM settled on a common fluid called Mercon. Mercon or Dextron III are commonly used as replacements for type A.
