brought a WD home. There is a hole in the Govoner that is open, about 1/2 inch. no threads. should this be open. There is an oil cap on the Gov. What is that for? Do you really put oil into the engine from the top under a hood that dont come off? Recommeded fluids and capacities would also be appreciated.

Put the oil in the fill cap at the governor. The cap on the valve cover is a breather, I believe. Don't worry about stuff getting in the hole behind the filler cap, as the area that it goes into is isolated from anything else, and I think that there is another hole an the back side down low that is hard to see. You could always plug the hole, I don't see how you could hurt anything. After we rebuillt ours, we went to multi grade engine oil, detergent type, but stayed with non detergent in the trans. I don't think that would be a problem either, as I have never had trouble with sudsing in a newer trans.

The hole is there for some reason but it has to be open, there is a hole on the bottom too. The oil that I put in is 30 Weight in the engine (6 qts), 80w-90 in the trans,Diff,Clutch (17 qts), Final Drives (1 3/4 qts each), Fuel Tank (15 gal), Radiator (30 1/2 gal) Hyd (6 qts)

And then there is the hydraulic pump which is supposed to have 5 qts 20W non-detergent motor oil. The owner's manual says to use 10W below 45 degrees F. but I've never seen any of my dad's customers change it back and forth. My radiators take only 3.5 gal.

The hole behind the oil filler cap is where a pin drives through when assembling the mag drive to the gov shaft.

The hole is supposed to be there...used for timing. Yes that's where you add oil...and the hood does come off. You have to take off the band and a few screws out of the radiator cover. I would suggest that that the first thing you should do is buy a manual for the tractor (about $22). It will help immensly. Want to let you know that you bought a great tractor!!!LOL

Yes that 1/2" hole is open, nothing goes in it. the other hole is where u put the motor oil what ever kind u use.

That is what is on my WD

I have a whole on my govener also in which I put a plastic plug in. Should I be taking this out? I figured I did not want rain going into it.

My Dad put a cork in the hole back in '58 when we rebuilt his (now mine) WD. Seems like a good way to keep water and dirt out and it's still there today.
