AC B gear ratios

Attn all AC B experts, I have a B that at 3/4 throttle in first gear moves out so fast I can't imagine mowing with it. That's bad, because I bought it to mow. I heard somewhere that there were more than one ratio for B's and C's. If this is true, do you change the reduction gears in the rear axle housings, or the ring and pinion gears in the rear end? Thanks in advance for your support!

What kind of mowing do you want to do with it? I use a 72" finish mower on a CA in 3rd gear with no problems

The gears are the same in the B & C trannys. Difference is in the final drive. The B has a 14T drive pinion and 67T driven gear, a ratio of 4.78. There were 3 combinations used during the production of Cs. The 12T pinion and 69T driven was used for all Cs after serial #C15714 with steel wheels, and after C23080 with air tires, a ratio of 5.75. Pinion shafts are different length on the B & C so you would have to change complete LH and/or RH final drive assemblies. Does your tractor have oversize tires? Most Bs came on 8-24, 7-24 was also used.

First of all, thank you very much for the reply. I got lots of help, but yours was what I needed. Now all I have to do, (please confirm if this is right), is take the final drives apart and count the teeth. If other than the 14t and 69t, I may have a special order ratio or something. I do have 24" tires, 23 deg.field and road, so there is no real problem there. I have a friend that has a "C" carcass and will let me have the final drive gears in return for restoration help to be determined later, (isn't the antique tractor business great?) I'm hoping they will be a slower ratio than my "B". He mows with his "C" and it is much slower in every gear. The service manual shows the "B" and "C" final drives to be the same except for a difference in the seal on a "B". One last thing, if you happen to have a parts catalog on the "B" and "C" does it show the different final drive gears and their part numbers? Thanks again for the info. Just knowing there were optional ratios gives me reason to tear into it. I'm sure that it is just to fast in first now to chance putting a mower under it. Lane

Lane, you miss understood. There are no optional gear ratios. The "C" differential and axle housing is 6 inches wider and the axle shaft is 6 inches longer. It will not fit a B unless you use the entire final drive box. It hard to believe you cant cut grass in first gear. My B wont go 3 mph down hill with the wind in first gear. Some guys even used second gear. On a B you should have a 60 inch deck. 72 might be a little big if you get anywhere but the front lawn.

Well I am not an AC expert, but I have read a few of the books and manuals around and I haven't heard of any optional high speed gearing. I would certainly like to know about this interesting little bit of information though if there was indeed such a thing.
