WC timing marks

I have a 38WC. The IT manual sez there is a timing mark on the flywheel that is 30 degrees BTC and marked F for fire. I have peered into every hole I can that looks at or even near the flywheel & have not yet seen ANY marks! There is a golf ball sized opening on each side just below the frame rails that looks directly at the outer rim of the flywheel. I have scraped all the way around the flywheel twice one window at a time. No marks. I started it, stuck a wire brush in the hole, doused it with solvent, wiped it all off with a shop rag, shut it off, marked it with a soap stone & went all the way around. No marks. There is a hole between the block & clutch housing on the right side below & to rear of the right headlamp. Didn't see any marks there either. Removed the belly plate covering the throwout bearing etc. Removed the standard issue bumble bee nest but no timing marks. Even looked for marks on the shaft through the hole between the mag & the governor housing. Nothing.

Gave up & bent a wire to feel the piston through the spark plug hole using a dial indicator. Rocked the crank back & forth 'till I measured .015" both BTC and ATC. Split the difference, set the crank at this middle position then looked in every hole I found. No timing marks. I then set the mag to trip impulse at this position then backed the engine up, rolled it in running direction 'till the mag just stopped. This should be the 30 degree BTC point since it has a 30 degree impulse coupling on the mag. Looked in all the holes. No timing marks.

I put the mag on as described above, completely disassembled, cleaned & re-installed the carburetor and now it starts on the third impusle, doesn't kick, and idles well. I am simply stumped by this WC's timing marks! Am I looking for the right thing in all the wrong places?

Thought you guys might be able to help. Sorry it's been such a long story but I thought you'd get a kick out of a JD monkey gettin lost on an Allis. Still been fun and I like 'em all!

Thanks for your time and advice.

Later.

Look thru the belly pan hole(remove the large cover plate). You might find a timing mark on the rear face of the fly wheel (on the "rim" of the flywheel around the clutch pressure plate. Some are marked only TDC, some are marked only 30 degrees advanced, some are marked both places, some are marked TDC on both sides and 30 degrees advanced on both sides - 180 degrees apart (so you can use any cylinder/spark plug to set the timing if you use a timing light). I recommend that you set the timing with a timing light with the engine running at "high idle" or max RPM; and set it on the 30 degree advanced mark.
The lag angle only comes into play at hand cranking or staring speeds. They can vary some. Good luck, Gordon

The timing light was my intent. Have just grown accustomed to using one on the Deeres because so many have Wico mags where the run & static timing is so easily changed.

I didn't look on the rear face of the flywheel. Did remove the belly plate. That's where the bees nest was. Almost filled a big coffee can twice!

Thanks for the tip. Will get a big light & go hunting again!

Let ya know.

I am glad I read all that so I don't even
begin to look for mark's on my 1937WC. But I
do have to change out all the gear's in the
front because a piece of the gov broke off
while I was turning it over with my special
110 volt starter. I have much work into this thing and money. Hope I get some work and enjoyment back when I get her going Steve
