AC D14 with starting problems (electrical?)

I have a friend who is working on a D14 who is having trouble getting it started. The cable going to the starter heats up when he tries to start it. He has cleaned all the connections, except at the starter (apparently that is a real bear to get at). Is there anyway he can check the starter once he gets half the tractor torn apart to get to it?
Also, this was an original 6 volt positive ground system converted to a 12 volt positive ground by the dealer. (When this conversion is done, I thought the polarity was typically changed to negative ground also). Any help will be appreciated.

Steve;
I have had the same problen, I got a Pony Massey 1950, I converted it 2 12v put a chev alt. on it
after a while starting it, the starter went bad. Had 2 rebuild mine already. Just remember that when u put 12v 2 a 6v unit it workes on the feilds in the starter.
I got a wd45 converted over 2 12v had 2 rebulid the starter conection, need good heavy cables 2 take the curent.
Good luck
Richard

getting hot means lots of resistance. if the terminals are o.k. then the cable might be damaged inside. i have seen plastic coated cables that are green with acid (on the copper wires) inside. you might try replacing the cable if everything else is clean. 12 volt conversions make the starter draw half as mcuh current and usually they are easier to start because the electic cables doe not need to be in as good of condition. if it is positive or negative ground depends on if they installed an old generator from the 1960's (positive ground) or a new alternator off a truck, which are all negative ground. this has nothing to do with the starting.

Steve,
Thanks for the help, your thinking is pretty much along the line of what I thought, there has to be a resistance somewhere. My buddy has cleaned all the connections except at the starter, which is a bear to get at. I was hoping to find one more option for him, but I guess he's going to have to replace the starter or the cable. thanksa again

Steve is on the right track, just replace the cable and try it from there. The starter connection is rarely a dirty one anyway, the bear to get at part keeps it clean.
