WC serial #.

Recently became the owner of a WC. I have a few questions....

His serial # is WC52861. Was told it was a '37 & would just like to verify with some creditable people just what year it really is.

Second question.... What rear tires SHOULD it have on it? It has a pair of Goodyear long bar, short bar 900X24's on it & looks real goofy! Always going up hill. I'm thinking 13.6 or 14.9's should be here but the rims (spoked) are only about 8" wide from bead flange to bead flange. What to do? Previous owner wants the tires back for his Farmall A.

Third.... I assume the top brass top tank of the radiator was painted right along with everything else even though it could be polished up to be a nice shiny brass with ALLIS CHALMERS stamped across the front. Paint? No paint? Have seen both at shows. Have seen paint with black letters too. Right now it looks the tractor looks like it was brush painted with a brown latex house paint. It really is quite ugly!

Just looking at a 1955 trade-in book I have and the first WC listed is 1938 beginning with serial #60790 so 1937 is likely correct. My WC parts book shows 11.25 x 24 air tires used prior to serial #59636. The first air tires had a knobby tread, then the Chevron type bar lugs were developed and sold later. Someplace around here - a former AC dealership - I have an issue of Old Allis News which reports what the old 11.25 cross-section has evolved into, probably 13.6.

As I recall those old unstyled WCs, they were painted totally orange then decals applied.

I think older WCs had 26" rims. Later ones, cast, not spoked, were 28.

The 9-24s are smaller than original, but they would be OK for a B and people are looking for tires like those. Problem is you can't buy tires like were used on the WC originaly. I don't know the proper terminology but I call them "balloon" type tires. They stood taller on the rim than modern tires, a 14.9 x24 approximates the original tire but when you mount them on an 8" rim they look "goofy" also because they are disigned to mount on a wider rim. The guys that are lucky enough to have a nice set of original round spoke rims have to either live with odd looking tires or try to find decent old ones. Our WC is on cut-off steel with 10" rims welded on so the 14.9s will look OK.
