Hand operated brakes , What year(s)

Asking for a friend who has an old B. He doesn't know what year and the only unique feature is that it has hand-lever operated brakes. I'm not an AC guy so I can't help him. Can someone tell us what year(s) this tractor was made? We're at work now and it would be great if someone would respond b4 7pmCST. Thanks

My '41 B has hand brakes. The guy I bought it from said that 1941 was the last year they had hand brakes. Could be that they switched mid-year given an earlier comment.

The B was built from 1947 to 1958. I think 1941 was the last year for hand brakes. You can find the year it was built with the serial number in front of the shifter.

I looked in Norm Swinford's book on A-C Tractors and I don't see where he mentions when they switched the brakes from hand to foot. However, my dad bought a B new in 1941, and it had foot brakes.

Nick, thanks for the info. He'll be using it this week and is going to get the serial number so we can try and identify it. Any tips for steering and breaking at the same time?

control speed with the throttle. When you need to use the brakes to stop, put a knee on the wheel to hold it straight and use both hands on the brakes if you are going kinda fast. If you are going slow just garb one brake and it will stop you. If you have some speed you want to brake even, both brakes. Mostly use the engine braking though to slow down. Never coast to FAST speeds. If using a knee on the wheel to steere be ready to grab the wheel with a hand and let go of the other brake if you are going fast, you don't want to brake hard on one side if you are going fast. It isn't as complicated as I make it sound.

My early 1941 C has hand brakes so I just assume that some time in 1941 was the change to foot brakes for both the C and the B. I don't have any tips for using the hand brakes. If the tractor doesn't need to be original he can change to foot brakes.

David,
My '40 B has foot brakes. There was a kit to convert hand brakes to foot brakes and many were converted.
As for steering and braking, grab the brake on the side you want to turn towards and steer with the other hand.
