I was surfing thru this message board and ran accross the thread for a "CA" that wouldn't stay in third gear. You'all gave the advise about the value of the tractor but not what to do about the transmission. My "CA" does the same thing, no grinding, no difficulty putting it in 3rd, it doesn't even take much pressure on the shifter to hold it in gear. Any ideas on what it would take to fix this?

By the way this is a great lawn mower! I have a 72" Art's Way belly mount deck, and it does a great job!

Yes 3rd gear is a great gear for mowing lawn on a CA. Somewhat of a common problem. I had CA that did it and held it in place with my foot while mowing until I bought a different CA. If you search some more you will find the fix. You have to tear into the gearbox of the tractor and repair the worn pieces. A good winter project. Not really a weekend job for most of us. Takes a little more time.

Thanks for the reply. I guess I will tear it apart this winter. I'll have more time after my November retirement. I've also got all the pieces restored for a "B" but painting and assembly will be put behind this latest purchase.
